What a raw spread or ECN account actually is

A raw spread account, often labelled ECN or “raw” by brokers, is a pricing model that passes through the interbank or liquidity-provider quotes with little or no markup baked into the spread. Instead of earning from a widened bid-ask gap, the broker charges a separate, fixed commission per traded lot. The result is a spread that can fall to a fraction of a pip on major pairs during liquid sessions, sometimes touching zero, with the trading cost expressed transparently as the spread plus the commission rather than hidden inside the price.

The contrast is with a standard or “commission-free” account, where the broker marks up the spread and charges no separate fee. On those accounts a EUR/USD spread might sit around a pip or more all-in; on a raw account the same pair might show 0.0 to 0.2 pips plus a round-turn commission. Neither is automatically cheaper — it depends on how often and how large you trade. The providers in the comparison above all offer a raw or ECN tier, so the table is the place to read off the exact commission and typical spread each one quotes.

Who raw spread accounts suit

Raw pricing rewards traders whose total cost is dominated by the spread rather than the commission. That tends to mean:

  • Scalpers and high-frequency traders who open and close many positions a day, where shaving a fraction of a pip off every entry and exit compounds quickly.
  • Algorithmic and EA-driven traders who need tight, predictable pricing and fast execution, since the strategy’s edge can be thin enough that spread drag matters.
  • Larger-size traders who deal in full lots, where a known per-lot commission is easy to model and the percentage cost of the spread on a big notional is what they care about.

They suit beginners and low-frequency traders less well. If you place a handful of small trades a month, the flat commission can make a raw account more expensive in practice than a marked-up spread account, and the all-in simplicity of a commission-free account is easier to reason about. The break-even point is roughly where the commission you pay is smaller than the extra spread you would have paid on a standard account for the same volume.

How to compare raw accounts properly

The headline “0.0 pip spread” is marketing; the real cost is the spread plus commission together, so compare on the full round-turn number. When weighing the options in the list above, look at:

  • The commission per lot, stated per side or round turn, and which currency it is charged in. A common structure is a few units of account per standard lot per side, but the exact figure varies, so read it directly.
  • Typical versus advertised spread. Minimum spreads are quoted in ideal conditions; the average spread during the hours you actually trade is more meaningful.
  • Execution model. True ECN/STP routing sends orders to liquidity providers and shows depth of market, whereas some “raw” accounts are still dealer-side with a no-dealing-desk label. Check whether market depth and last-look behaviour are disclosed.
  • Slippage and requotes during news, since tight spreads can widen sharply when liquidity thins.
  • Minimum deposit and minimum trade size, as some raw tiers require a higher opening balance than the broker’s standard account.
  • Platform support, because raw accounts are usually offered on MetaTrader 4/5 or cTrader, and cTrader in particular is built around ECN-style depth-of-market pricing.

Costs, execution and the trade-offs

The appeal of raw pricing is transparency and tightness, but there are genuine trade-offs to keep in mind:

  • Pros: the lowest spreads available from a given broker, a cost structure you can calculate exactly, access to deeper liquidity and, on true ECN, the ability to see and trade against market depth.
  • Cons: a commission applies even on tiny trades; tight spreads still widen during illiquid periods and major data releases; and the cost advantage disappears if your volume is low. Variable spreads also mean you cannot rely on a fixed cost the way you can on some fixed-spread standard accounts.

Regulation matters as much for a raw account as any other. The pricing model does not change a broker’s licensing, client-money segregation or leverage limits, all of which depend on the regulator the broker operates under. Treat tight spreads as one factor among several rather than the only one, and confirm the regulatory standing of any provider in the comparison before funding an account.

Frequently asked questions

Is a raw spread account cheaper than a standard account?

Only if you trade enough volume for the saving on the tighter spread to outweigh the separate commission. For frequent or larger-size traders it usually is; for occasional traders placing small positions, a commission-free standard account can work out cheaper overall. Compare the spread plus commission together rather than the spread alone.

Why do raw accounts charge a commission if the spread is so tight?

Because the broker no longer earns from a marked-up spread. On a raw or ECN account the quotes are passed through close to the underlying liquidity-provider prices, so the commission is how the broker is paid for routing the order. It is simply a more transparent way of charging for the same service.

Does a raw account mean true ECN execution?

Not always. “Raw” describes the pricing, not necessarily the routing. Some raw accounts are genuine ECN/STP with depth of market, while others are no-dealing-desk or even dealer-side arrangements that still offer tight, commission-based pricing. Check how each provider in the list above describes its execution model and whether it discloses market depth.

What platforms support raw spread accounts?

Raw and ECN accounts are most commonly offered on MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader. cTrader is designed around ECN-style pricing with visible order-book depth, while MetaTrader is widely used for both manual and automated trading. The comparison above shows which platforms each broker pairs with its raw tier.
