James Michael Flaherty was a Canadian politician born in December 30th 1949 and died on 10th April 2014. He served as provisional minister of finance from 2001 to 2002 and Federal Minister of Finance from 2006 to 2014. He was also member of Ontario Progress Conservative Party and member of Provisional Parliament for Ajax, Whitby. As a member of Conservative Party of Canada, he won the riding of Whitby by beating the Judi Longfield, a liberal incumbent, in Federal election held in January 2006. Jim Flaherty was reelected in 2008 and 2011. Christine Elliott, Jim Flaherty widows is currently the Deputy Premier of Ontario.
Jim Flaherty attended Loyola High School and Bishop Whelan High School where he got early education. He received degree in Bachelor of Arts and Sociology from Princeton University. He also wrote thesis on sensitivity training on Camp X, an Ontario based military institute. He also received degree in Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University. Before entering into politics, Jim Flaherty practice law for twenty years. He was the founding partner of Flaherty Dow Elliott & McCarthy LLP, known as law firms specialized in personal injury litigation and motor vehicle accident.
On March 2014, Jim Flaherty decided to resign from the post of Minister of Finance in order to return to private sector. At the time of his resignation, he had been the honor of being the “longest continuous serving cabinet minister in a single portfolio in 28th Canadian Ministry. An office building in Ottawa from Department of Finance is named after Jim Flaherty.
