The Paraguay Guarani is an officially announced national currency of Paraguay with currency code PYG and symbol (₲ in Unicode). It was subdivided into 100 céntimos, but due to high inflation, small currency units are no longer in use.
A constitution for creation of national currency was passed on 5th October 1943; the Paraguay Guarani was introduced as the national currency in 1944 by replacing the peso. The money was pegged to the U.S. dollar between 1960 and 1985.
The first series of coins was introduced in 1944 in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 céntimos. The second issue of coins was made in 1953 comprises of 10, 15, 25 and 50 céntimos. The third series was introduced in 1975 in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 50 guarantees. Coin of 100 guarantees was added in 1990, 500 in 1997 and 1000 were minted in 2006 and released in 2007.
The first series of Paraguay guarani regular banknotes was made in 1943 in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000; all were printed by De La Rue. The second series was made in 1963 with same denominations but with an addition of 5000 and 10,000 banknotes. Banknotes of 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 were introduced on 22nd December 2016 with upgraded security.
