The kina is an official currency of Papua New Guinea with currency code PGK and symbol K. The money is subdivided into 100 toea. Papua New Guinea Kina was introduced as an official currency on 19th May 1975 by replacing the Australian dollar, which was ceased as legal tender on the next day.
The first series of coins was introduced in 1975 in denominations of 1 kina and 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 toea; the currencies of 1 and 2 toea were minted in bronze while other in cupro-Nickle. Coins of 1 and 2 toea were ceased in 2006; the first series of banknotes was issued on 19th April 1975 in denominations of 2, 5, and 10 kinas. Banknote of 20 kinas was added in 1977 and 50 kinas in 1988 and 100 kinas in 2005.
