The krone is an official currency of Norway and its independent territories with currency code NOK and symbol kr. The money is subdivided into 100 øre. It is 13th record traded currency in the world by worth.
The Norway krone was introduced as an official currency in 1875 by replacing the Norwegian spesidaler. Norway joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union which was established in 1873. The Union continued up to 1914. After its closure, the Norway, Sweden and Denmark all decided to retain the name of their particular and since then distinct currencies.
The first series of Norway krone coins were introduced in 1875 in denominations of 10, 50 ore and 1, 10 kroner. In 1877 the Norges Bank introduced the first series of banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 krone.
