Since 1993, the Namibia Dollar is an official currency of Namibia with currency code NAD and symbol $, alternative symbol N$ is used to distinguish it from other dominated dollar currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents.
The South African rand was Namibia’s currency while it was under South Africa rule from 1920 to 1990. The South African rand is still a legal tender because Namibia Dollar is pegged to South African rand. The alternative names were suggested at the beginning of the introduction of Namibia Dollar such as Namibian kalahar, but ultimately Namibia government selected the name Namibia Dollar. On 15th September 1993, the first banknote was issued by the Bank of Namibia.
The first national coin was issued in December 1993. The years of mintage are 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2015. The coins are made of brass and nickel. On January 2019, the production of 5 cents coins was ceased, but they are still used for day-to-day transactions.
