The Macedonia denar is an official currency of North Macedonia with currency code MKD and symbol den / ден. On 8th September 1991, Macedonia was declared as independent state. At that time it was using currency of Yugoslav dinar. After independence, undisclosed groundwork was started to announce its own official currency. In April 1992, Macedonia was equipped to attain its monetary independence as well from Yugoslavia. The National Bank of Macedonia was established on April 1992 with the purpose to issue currency. In April 1992, the denar was declared as currency of Macedonia. On 30th April 1992, the Yugoslavia denar was ceased to be legal tender. The Macedonia denar was replaced with Yugoslavia denar at rate 100 to 1.
The temporary banknotes of Macedonia denar was introduced on 27th April 1992. The second permanent series of banknotes was issued in 1993 in denomination of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 denari by replacing the temporary series. Banknotes of 1000 and 5000 denari were added in 1996.
