Since 1943, dollar is an official currency of Liberia with currency code LRD and symbol L$ or LD$ to distinguish it from other dollar currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents. The dollar was adopted as Liberian currency in 1847. It was pegged to US dollar until 1907. Later Liberia adopted British pound and pegged to sterling. Coins of 1 and 2 cents were only Liberian coins until 1896. The last issue of coins were made in 1906 in denominations of 1, 2, 10, 25 and 50 cents. The Liberia dollar banknotes of 10 and 50 cents and 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 dollars were issued between 1857 and 1880 by the Treasury Department.
In 1935, US dollar was adopted again as Liberia currency by replacing the British pound. In 1935, Liberia started issuing its own coins alongside US currency. In 1980, old coins were replaced with banknote of $5 with new design. The banknotes of newly design printed during 1980, was modified during Civil War of 1990-2004 to exclude notes robbed from the Central Bank of Liberia.
Recently Liberia dollar banknotes of $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and coins of 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1 are generally circulation in Liberian economy.
