The maloti or loti is an official currency of the Kingdom of Lesotho with currency code LSL and symbol L or M. The currency is subdivided into 100 lisente. Through the Common Monetary Area, maloti is pegged with South African rand. Both currencies are accepted as legal tender within the Kingdom of Lesotho. In 1966, Lesotho maloti was introduced as an official currency. The first coins were issued in 1980 in denominations of 1 sente and 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 lisente to replace the South African rand. In 1996, the coins of 2 and 5 maloti were introduced.
First banknotes were issued in January 1980 in denominations of 2, 5 and 10 maloti. The banknotes of 20 and 50 maloti were introduced in 1981 and banknotes of 100 and 200 maloti were issued in 1994. On 1st March 2011, the Central Bank of Lesotho introduced whole new series of banknotes expected at fighting the spread of reproductions. Recently Lesotho maloti banknotes of M10, M20, M50, M100, M200 and coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 lisente, L1, M2, and M5 are generally circulation in Lesotho economy.
