The Jordanian dinar is an official currency of Jordan since 1950. The currency code is JOD. Dinar is further divided into 10 dirhams, 100 piasters and 1000 fulus. In the West Bank, dinar is also generally used along the Israeli shekel. The Jordan dinar is pegged to United State dollar. On 25th May 1946, Jordan became an independent kingdom. After the independence the idea of introducing national currency arise in the country. This led to the passing of Provisional Act No.35 on 1949. The Jordan Currency board was established under this act. The Jordan Currency Board became the sole authority for issuance of currency notes in Jordan Kingdom.
On July 1950, Jordan dinar was introduced as an official currency of Jordan Kingdom by replacing the replacing the Palestine pound. Coins were introduced in 1949. In 1959, the Central Bank of Jordan took over the authority and responsibility for issuance of currency in the country. Banknote of 20 dinar were introduced in 1977 and 50 dinar in 1999.
