The Honduras lempira is an official currency of Honduras with currency code HNL and symbol L. It is further subdivided into 100 centavos. The currency was named in 16th century on the name of national hero and renowned folklore cacique Lempira, for leading against the Spanish conquistador force. The Cacique Lempira is also honored on currency note of lempira 1 and coins of 20 and 50 centavos.
Honduras Lempira was introduced as an official currency of Honduras in 1931 by replacing the peso. The coins of 1, 5, 20 and 50 centavos were introduced. Coins of 10, 1 and 2 centavos were introduced in 1932, 1935 and 1939 respectively. The coins of 1 and 2 were stopped in 1974 and 1998 respectively.
The first Honduras lempira banknotes were introduced in 1932 by Banco Atlántida and Bank of Honduras. In 1950, the Central Bank of Honduras took over the printing of banknotes. Recently banknotes of L1, L2, L5, L10, L20, L50, L100, L500 and coins of 5, 10, 20, 50 centavos are under circulation in Honduras economy.
