Quetzals is currency of Guatemala with code GTQ, entitled on the name of national bird, the resplendent quetzal. In an ancient time, the quetzal bird feather were used as currency. Guatemala-Quetzals is subdivided into 100 lenes or centavos.
The Guatemala-Quetzals was introduced in 1925. Until 1987, the quetzals was domestically pegged and equal to United State Dollar, before it was also pegged to French franc as well. The Central Bank of Guatemala issued 1st banknote in 1993. Now banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 quetzals while coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 centavos and 1 quetzal are under circulation in Guatemala economy.
